After many years of planning , the extension was built October - December 2005. It is the first major addition to the building since 1875. A service of dedication, performed by John Pritchard, Bishop of Jarrow, took place on Sunday 29th January 2006. The extension contains a small kitchen, store room and a toilet with disabled facilities.
